The Shared Resources Team of the Wisconsin Inter Tribal Task Force is proud to present a dynamic, up-to-date and engaging course typically offered bi-annually and aimed to build cultural competency within WisDOT’s workforce.
The purpose of the Building Bridges training program is to provide a greater knowledge and understanding of the relationship between the state of Wisconsin and the eleven federally recognized tribes located within the state. Curriculum includes: the cultural and historical background of the Wisconsin Tribes; a review of legal issues on the federal, state and tribal levels that have shaped the government-to-government relationship between tribes and foreign governments; a chronological introduction of impactful historical events and policies that have defined today’s government-to-government relationships; a detailed summary of the WisDOT Tribal Affairs programs and initiatives that reinforces the importance of strong partnerships between WisDOT and tribes; an overview of tribal initiatives of critical cultural importance; and real time tips in working with tribes on projects that affect them.
The course involves 12 Sections that progressively build the foundation for cultural competence in working with tribes. We value-add to the curriculum through interactive lecture style information-sharing, interactive exercises and expose attendees to current perspectives of enjoying and preserving indigenous foods. Finally, we literally bridge together the course material and the new appreciation of cultural differences into day-to-day practical and useable application.
The Building Bridges Training will be offered in four locations, and the training will be for two days. Each session will offer room for 50 people, with an opportunity to train 200 WisDOT staff and external people.
- Gain an understanding of the generally misunderstood foundation of America’s law and policy, historically through today, regarding the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island.
- Gain an appreciation of why historical and cultural exchanges continue to dramatically impact even the most mundane administrative relations interaction to this day.
- Incorporate these newfound understandings and appreciations into the day-to-day work of Wisconsin and the “Indian Tribes”.

This is an opportunity for Tribal, state, federal and transportation construction professionals to come together and increase their knowledge of governmental and transportation initiatives of the 11 Tribes of Wisconsin and WisDOT.
Sessions include: How to do business with WisDOT, transportation safety, cultural resources and preservation, and federal Indian law and Tribal transportation projects.

- Construction industry representatives, business owners and consultants – prime contractors.
