FTA Update: Bus Safety Webinars and NEW Competitive Opportunity: USDOT RAISE Grants

USDOT RAISE Program Funding Opportunity – Solicitation for Project Proposals:

The RAISE program, formerly known as BUILD (and before that as TIGER) supports major surface transportation capital and planning projects, including rail, transit, highway, and port infrastructure in urban and rural areas nationwide.

Total Funding Available: $1 Billion

Funding per project: Maximum: $25 million.  Minimum for Capital projects: $5 million (urban) / $1 million (rural) / No minimum for planning projects

Eligible Applicants: State, local, and tribal governments, transit agencies, port authorities, other political subdivisions of state or local governments.

Eligible Projects: Any or all Capital projects related to surface transportation infrastructure including any public transportation capital projects that would be eligible under regular chapter 53 FTA programs, as well as intermodal facilities and passenger rail infrastructure, roads, highways, bridges, freight, and ports.  Planning projects related to the feasibility, environmental analysis, or pre-construction activities of the above eligible surface transportation capital projects are also eligible.

Match Required: 20% for urban projects.

If your organization decides to apply, please follow the instructions in the NOFO carefully, address all parts of each section, attach well organized supporting documentation, pictures/data that supports your proposal, and submit your application before the deadline with time to spare. No applications are accepted after the deadline and time allowances are not made for technical problems.  After the deadline passes, I will not know the outcome or timeline of the competitive process until the selections are announced publicly (which can be many months later).


FTA will host virtual Bus Agency Safety Plan (ASP) Implementation Workshops to help participants plan and practice implementing elements of their ASPs. In these new workshops, participants will collaboratively explore ways to implement and assess Safety Management System processes described in their ASPs. The workshops are offered based on agency size to allow participants to share and discuss processes relevant to their agency type. Registration is limited to 70 per workshop, so act fast!

The workshops are open to staff and contractors of recipients or subrecipients of Urbanized Area Formula Grant Program funds who are responsible for developing or implementing an ASP. State Department of Transportation staff that assist small public transportation providers within their States may also participate. FTA will provide all materials electronically. There is no cost to attend.
